We wrote about the testing done in Colombia about three years ago HERE and highlighted the article in the NYtimes HERE .

In our link below a TV documentary with an update on this large family with Alzheimer and the mutation in the disease that may yet hold the key to a solution. The study is planned to be concluded in 2020 so nothing goes fast with this horrible disease but at least there is optimism about a potential new path for finding a cure.

As it turns out, anxiety and depression are among the first early signs of Alzheimer. This does not mean at all that everyone who feels anxious or depressed should worry about having Alzheimer, just like not everyone lying in bed dies although most people die lying in bed. It is just a point about the fact that we need to look beyond the obvious to find early signs of Alzheimer as this provides yet the best opportunity for intervention.

One County will fight Alzheimer

Alzheimer’s is the third leading cause of death in San Diego County. The stark statistics prompted county Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dianne Jacob to team with Supervisor Dave Roberts to propose local action to speed up the search for a cure and help the 60,000 area residents with the disease. Key recommendations of the initiative, including one for a fund drive to spur research innovation, will be presented Tuesday at the supervisors’ meeting. The U-T Editorial Board recently met with Jacob, philanthropist Darlene Shiley and Dr. Jerold Chun of the Scripps Research Institute to discuss the project. Here is an edited transcript of the interview.
