Dr. Ruth on Alzheimer

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Dr Ruth has written a book on Alzheimer caregivers. Here is what the Huffington post said about it:

She took everything she knows about behavioral therapy and applied it to Alzheimer’s caregiving in Part One, Advice from Dr. Ruth. In Part Two, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, she presents information she’s gleaned from friends and acquaintances, her own research and communications with experts in the field. Although she says, “Thankfully, I have not had to deal with caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s,” from reading this book one would assume she has had several years of experience doing just that.

Drinking a liter per day keeps the Alzheimer away

Alzheimer; News from the web:

British researchers have found that if patients drink a liter of silicon rich mineral water per day for 13 weeks, the cognitive decline either stops or improves in a majority of them.

The water seems to flush the aluminum levels in the body, which helps to keep the development of plaques and tangles down that create the cognitive decline.

Tidy up to help people with Alzheimer

Alzheimer; News from the web:

For me a surprising news item; it turns out that people with Alzheimer have difficulty noticing differences between different objects. Apparently the part of the brain that stores temporary memories short term also plays a role in recognizing objects.

Here is a potential use:

The results indicate that, under certain circumstances, reducing “visual clutter” might help MCI patients perform everyday activities.

For example, telephone buttons tend to be the same size and color. Only the numbers are different — a very slight visual difference for a person who struggles with object perception. Perhaps a phone with varying sized buttons and different colors would help.

Now don’t jump for joy yet, in humans the disease takes years to develop so by the time symptoms become visible the brain is already badly damaged but  nevertheless we encourage every piece of good news.

Enzyme against Alzheimer

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Scientists at the Mayo clinic have discoved that an enzyme known as BACE2 is particularly effective at breaking down beta-amyloid, widely known for being a factor in Alzheimer’s disease.

Although it is not the first enzyme found to have this function, BACE2 is certainly more effective at breaking beta-amyloid down. Now the scientists want to find out if a BACE2 impairment can increase the risk of getting the disease, this may then contain valuable new clues about the origin of the disease.
