Many patients with a newly identified subtype of Alzheimer’s disease are misdiagnosed and don’t receive proper treatment, researchers report. They analyzed the brains of more than 1,800 Alzheimer’s patients and found that 11 percent of them had this subtype, called “hippocampal sparing Alzheimer’s disease.”

Hope for Alzheimer from Taiwan

Six Taiwan-based scientists have announced what may be a long hoped-for breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. They have discovered that so-called statins, drugs developed originally to lower cholesterol levels, seem to reduce the risk of dementia by as much as one-quarter.

It is still early days and reduced risk does not mean prevention or treatment. But there is another glimmer of hope.
