Hormone treatment reduces Alzheimer risk

Alzheimer; News from the web:

New research findings from a long running study have shown that women who receive hormone treatment within five years of their meno pause, will have a 30% less chance of developing Alzheimer, with women who get the treatment later the effect is less.

One of the researchers said the study findings support the so-called timing hypothesis – that earlier treatment with hormones may be beneficial while later treatment may be harmful.

“It doesn’t prove the hypothesis,  “But it does suggest there might be something to that merits further investigation.”

Alzheimer research, two sides of the story

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Sometimes it is difficult for your editor to figure out what the real headlines are. Today is such a day with conflicting headlines rolling over my desk.

Drinking a liter per day keeps the Alzheimer away

Alzheimer; News from the web:

British researchers have found that if patients drink a liter of silicon rich mineral water per day for 13 weeks, the cognitive decline either stops or improves in a majority of them.

The water seems to flush the aluminum levels in the body, which helps to keep the development of plaques and tangles down that create the cognitive decline.

Tidy up to help people with Alzheimer

Alzheimer; News from the web:

For me a surprising news item; it turns out that people with Alzheimer have difficulty noticing differences between different objects. Apparently the part of the brain that stores temporary memories short term also plays a role in recognizing objects.

Here is a potential use:

The results indicate that, under certain circumstances, reducing “visual clutter” might help MCI patients perform everyday activities.

For example, telephone buttons tend to be the same size and color. Only the numbers are different — a very slight visual difference for a person who struggles with object perception. Perhaps a phone with varying sized buttons and different colors would help.

Astrocytes turn out to be our friends in fighting alzheimer

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Until now we have always found that the presence in the brain of hyper active astrocytes probably increases the rate of the development of the feared amyloid plaques. A new study however has found that, in mice, reducing the hyper activity of the astrocytes actually increases the amyloid plaques. So now the plan is to see if we can manage the efficient working of the astrocytes to give them a hand in keeping the amyloid plaques under control.
