Now, scientists may have figured out why: The disease appears to degrade a special type of eye cell that tells the brain when it’s day or night.

EPPS seen as effective against Alzheimer’s

Scientists tested a chemical called EPPS on mice that had been genetically engineered to contract a disease similar to Alzheimer’s in humans from five months of age. The researchers found that the amount of plaques characteristic in the brain had been reduced in the treated mice.

In a study released Monday, the researchers found after analyzing two decades of data that men treated with therapy to suppress their hormones were about 88 percent more likely to get Alzheimer’s during a follow-up period of about three years compared with prostate cancer patients who did not receive the treatment.
