Hope for Alzheimer from Taiwan

Six Taiwan-based scientists have announced what may be a long hoped-for breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. They have discovered that so-called statins, drugs developed originally to lower cholesterol levels, seem to reduce the risk of dementia by as much as one-quarter.

It is still early days and reduced risk does not mean prevention or treatment. But there is another glimmer of hope.

New research points at a protein called REST that is present in fetuses but now is thought to also play a role in protecting the brains of older people. Much more work needs to be done on this but it is yet another avenue in the path to finding a cure for the disease.

People from India aged 70 – 79 are FOUR times less likely to get Alzheimer. There must be some clue there. Is it the diet they keep? Apparently curcumin keeps plaques at bay and will help your brain health. This needs a lot more study but it cannot hurt to include some nice Indian dishes in your meal plan for next week.
