Alzheimer research, two sides of the story

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Sometimes it is difficult for your editor to figure out what the real headlines are. Today is such a day with conflicting headlines rolling over my desk.

Here are two stories that sound very different but are both good to read. The bottom line is that although the one will say the glass is half full and the other the glass is half empty, we feel there is still enough in the glass to be happy about:

Read the story about apparent age discrimination in relation to Alzheimer. The writer talks about the tension over age groups between younger audiences interested in prevention and older audiences interested in cure.

The battle between investing in cure or care is not yet over.

The site that brings this information though is of interest for all of you, it is a reading room with lots of articles and clips about the disease for you to peruse.

Possible breakthrough in Alzheimer research

Alzheimer; News from the web:

Scientist at the Harvard Medical School and researchers at the Queensland Brain Institute have found that the size of the mitochondria, the part responsible for metabolising energy in cells, matters and may cause the toxic proteins known as  Beta Amalloyd and Tau.

Apparently the larger the mitochondria the more difficult it is to travel along the nerve cells and those can be one meter in length. In tests with fruit flies and mice they have been able to test this relation between the size of the mitochondria and the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.

The director of Queensland’s Centre for Ageing Dementia Research, Jurgen Gotz, says scientists have been able to successfully treat abnormal mitochondria in fruit flies and mice.

“By changing their size back to normal it’s possible to restore their function and also to prevent the new ones dying,” he said.

Alzheimer, do you really want to know?

Alzheimer, News from the web:

At Harvard they have done a survey and found out that in five countries, 85% of people would like to know if they have Alzheimer once they start showing signs. This when there  is actually no known cure for the condition.

Other interesting findings were that Alzheimer was found as the second most feared disease after cancer. Also almost 75% of the population has some knowledge or involvement or experience with the condition.

We link to the page that will give you access to the full body of the survey and the charts.
