10 drugmakers work together to write alzheimer history

Pfizer Inc., Eli Lilly & Co. and eight other large drug makers will partner with the U.S. government in a $230-million effort to identify new approaches to treat Alzheimer’s, diabetes, lupus and arthritis.

Data generated from the work will be made public for other scientists to use, a move the U.S. National Institutes of Health called groundbreaking. The targeted diseases are some of the most prevalent conditions among Americans, costing the nation billions of dollars in treatment and lost productivity.

Pfizer is working on a project, together with a software development company, to develop a game that could eventually be used as a clinical tool to determine early signs of Alzheimer’s or other neurodegenerative diseases.

A wonderful initiative that we cannot support enough. The ACT on Alzheimer collaborative has many partners and supporters and tries to get towns and businesses friendly and adapted to accommodate people with Dementia and Alzheimer.

A Minnesota initiative, the list as their goals:

five goals:

  • Identify and invest in promising approaches that reduce costs and improve care.

  • Increase detection of Alzheimer’s disease and improve ongoing care and support.

  • Sustain caregivers by offering them information, resources and in-person support.

  • Equip communities to be “dementia capable” to support residents who are touched by Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Raise awareness and reduce stigma by engaging communities.

Good news, less Alzheimer

We don’t often get to report good news on these pages, but here is a report that the incidence of Alzheimer among the elderly is definitively dropping.

Now it is a mixed message because the number of older people, like over 80, will significantly increase as a result of demographics so the number of Alzheimer cases will still increase.
