According to the National Institute on Aging, “People with Alzheimer’s disease can be especially vulnerable in disaster situations. Their impaired memory and reasoning skills may severely limit their ability to cope. For caregivers, it is important to have a disaster plan that incorporates the special needs of the person with Alzheimer’s.”

Early Onset Alzheimer book

In “Beside the Mountain,” Stefania Silvestri takes an unflinching look at the decline of her father Giovanni, or “John” as he is called. At the age of 48, a doctor tells him he has the brain of an 85-year-old man.

The early form of the disease touches about 5% of people who will eventually be diagnosed with Alzheimer. The book tells the tale of lots of disbelieve in the community and immediate surroundings of the patient for this very early onset of the condition.

At Harvard they have done a survey and found out that in five countries, 85% of people would like to know if they have Alzheimer once they start showing signs. This when there  is actually no known cure for the condition.

Other interesting findings were that Alzheimer was found as the second most feared disease after cancer. Also almost 75% of the population has some knowledge or involvement or experience with the condition.
