Hope for Alzheimer from Taiwan

Six Taiwan-based scientists have announced what may be a long hoped-for breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. They have discovered that so-called statins, drugs developed originally to lower cholesterol levels, seem to reduce the risk of dementia by as much as one-quarter.

It is still early days and reduced risk does not mean prevention or treatment. But there is another glimmer of hope.

Anti depressant helps Alzheimer

Sometimes news is too good to be true and in this case…. Citalopram was found effective to reduce stress and anxiety in Alzheimer patients and thus also helped their caregivers reduce stress levels. Unfortunately not. Here the sad story about another two drugs that have failed in the trials.

Both bapineuzumab and solanezumab did not improve patients’ ability to think and solve problems, according to findings published in the Jan. 23 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

At this moment there are only a few therapies available and they only work for a limited time frame to delay the unavoidable run of the disease.

This new drug has not been effective with patients in later stages but it is now believed it would be effective in patients with an early development of Alzheimer.
