Researchers have found that the during sleep, and even under anesthesia, part of the brain behaves as if it’s remembering something. This is a new find in animal studies and there is no guarantee that the same will be true in humans but it looks like entorhinal cortex remains active during sleep and even under anesthetics ! This is a bit like my computer clearing out old temp files and doing backup jobs while I’m sleeping.

The findings are interesting and may open yet another avenue for further study.

Trouble sleeping? It may be Alzheimer’s

In a study with mice, the scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that trouble with sleeping may be an early sign of building up of plaques in the brain that is generally correlated with Alzheimer.

Finding an early signal can be important as it will help keeping the disease under control or at least slowing it down. This in itself does not yet indicate a new way to get to a medicine of some sort.

New biomarkers offer hope for Alzheimer

An article has been published as supplement to the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease and it explores the development of imaging-based biomarkers that will have an impact on diagnosis before the disease process is set in motion.

Many of the detection tools we rely on today only help identify the issue once the disease symptoms are clearly visible, this research may provide a new way of detection that may in turn lead to a better understanding of the progression of the disease
