The new drug, called Vizamyl, is a radioactive dye that is used along with brain scans to detect the presence of beta amyloid, the toxic protein that builds up in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease. It also goes by the name flutemetamol F 18.

Many patients with a newly identified subtype of Alzheimer’s disease are misdiagnosed and don’t receive proper treatment, researchers report. They analyzed the brains of more than 1,800 Alzheimer’s patients and found that 11 percent of them had this subtype, called “hippocampal sparing Alzheimer’s disease.”
